Development of drug device combination products

The medical device sector is enhancing the clinical and commercial value of their products by adding active molecules. Addition of an active typically extends the application of the device by improving the efficacy or safety. For example, addition of actives to cardiovascular stents has taken the market by storm, reducing the incidence of restenosis and creating a product category worth billions. Such combination products are fueling the growth of this segment, which is expected to be $10bn by 2009.
