Improving discovery by learning to make better decisions:  PA's ARBITER approach

Pharmaceutical R&D costs are increasing but productivity is decreasing

The falling productivity of R&D is putting pharmaceutical companies under pressure to improve the effectiveness of their Discovery functions. This has led to companies investing in ways to achieve earlier attrition. However the rate of late failure still remains high and senior executives are not gaining the increase in productivity they require.

It is hard to know how far to pursue research opportunities. Fail a compound too early and you may lose future value; fail it too late and time and money is wasted. Achieving the right balance in terms of the level of aggression and timing of attrition decisions is not easy.

PA has responded to our clients’ need by developing a novel approach to enable R&D leaders to learn to make better decisions in Discovery

This approach, ARBITER (Architecture for Reliable Business Improvement and Technology Evaluation in Research), is designed to support decision makers at strategic and operational levels. It enables you to simulate different scenarios in Discovery so you can optimize the quality and volume of output from your Discovery function.

ARBITER is based on proven statistical and artificial intelligence methods, that PA has implemented in other industries eg insurance risk reduction. PA believes that ARBITER is the first time an integrated solution combining flow, quality and capacity modeling has been applied to the pharmaceutical industry. PA has applied for a patent on the key components of the architecture, and plans to work with pharmaceutical companies to customize the approach to the individual company’s needs.
