Enabling enterprise-wide transformation through SAP R/3 and Pace
British Gas Services is one of the new business units resulting from the structural reorganization of British Gas, responsible for central heating installation and maintenance across the UK. In order to develop its vision for the 21st century, the client undertook a review of its cost base, organizational structure and prevailing market conditions. This identified a need for significant change in organizational structure and a commitment to further empower both management and supervisory staff. To facilitate this vision, British Gas Services selected the sophisticated SAP R/3 Human Resource and Payroll modules.
PA Consulting Group helped build the foundations for effective roll-out of SAP R/3. They recommended that, given the extent of the planned changes, it was essential that projected users clearly understood the requirements to deliver the management information efficiently.
PA faced one of its biggest challenges 10 weeks prior to the system's go-live deadline. As a result of extensive union negotiation, British Gas Services restructured all salaries to be payable monthly, but PA succeeded in implementing this new policy in the existing time scale. This major change represented a significant reconfiguration task that had to be carried out in parallel to the original roll-out plans. It was vital that the HR functions were delivered quickly as these formed the basis on which to achieve the structural reorganization.
