Case study
BP Amoco
Delivering global multi-disciplinary teamwork
BP Amoco, the result of the merger between BP and Amoco in 1999, is one of the largest companies in the world. It is an integrated oil, gas and petrochemical company with a growing interest in renewable energy sources.
In 1993 BP underwent a dramatic organizational change into a flat, federal structure of discrete businesses in the belief that smaller, semi-autonomous businesses could work more efficiently and creatively, resulting in stronger business performance.
A critical aspect of working in this virtual organization is for professional staff to be able to identify who can help them. PA Consulting Group worked with BP on several aspects of knowledge management including helping them to create a solution for the 'connecting people' aspect. The result was an employee-driven knowledge directory known as Connect on the BP intranet, consisting of detailed Web pages for staff worldwide. PA Consulting Group helped BP to build the foundation to connect a global workforce, ensure successful implementation and encourage use, to create savings and enable rapid information flow.
