Production readiness of Vista 6 engines

Perkins was to introduce the first of a new range of high performance electronically controlled diesel engines, with full production volumes early in 2002. The company faced various challenges with the new engine, such as the installation of new capital equipment and many new processes.

As part of Perkins' structured new-product introduction program, there was a need to determine readiness to progress into pilot production on the first of these engines. A joint Perkins-PA team came together for three weeks to conduct a study to focus on their Vista 6 engine's production readiness.
    
For each business function, key metrics were determined to measure the current status against the gateway pass criteria. These included measures such as drawing sign-off, capability of new equipment and number of outstanding suppliers needing to be quality- and logistics-approved. This allowed Perkins to verify the current status in a quantifiable way and to identify remaining program issues and risks. Outstanding activities were planned into the program and the linkage between functions enhanced. PA identified clear ownership, based on a matrix of those responsible, accountable, consulted and informed.

The project provided a clear, business-wide understanding of the current status, outstanding work and potential risks, as well as information to drive accelerated program delivery and enhance the skills of Perkins' people for transition to future manufacturing programs.
