Merger and performance improvement for two corporate accounting units

The corporate accounting and financial controls function of leading German bank Hypo Vereinsbank (HVB) is responsible for documenting and analysing the bank's financial results, reporting internally as well as externally. PA Consulting Group was invited to improve the performance of two units in this function, which had developed from legacy structures and now faced several challenges. This involved screening the outputs of these departments, reviewing their management structures as well as their staffing arrangements.

During five workshops the joint PA and HVB team identified operational improvements and new processes which together increased the department's efficiency by 15 per cent, and led to the outsourcing of a further 5 per cent of the work.
