Successful PA/NHS partnership delivers new computer system for general-practice doctors in Scotland
PA Consulting Group has participated with the National Health Service in Scotland to redevelop GPASS - a completely integrated Windows-based system for supporting general practitioners (GPs). GPASS (General Practioner Administration System) supports all aspects of the practice, including patient and clinical records, patient consultation facilities and powerful searching and information manipulation facilities.
First developed in 1985, the original system had become outdated and cumbersome. GPs, under pressure to meet Government expectations, were increasingly frustrated by the lack of tools to support their role in healthcare delivery. Urgent action was needed to replace the system and provide GPs with a well-designed, user-friendly facility.
PA, working in an innovative and effective public-private partnership with the GPASS Unit, completely redeveloped the system, releasing the first application within six months of the start. Using PA's unique Rapid Systems Development approach, the work is transforming the delivery of healthcare in Scotland by providing GPs with a range of systems resources including: a flexible, feature-rich system that fits their way of running a practice, geared to their personal style in the consulting room electronic communication to improve their key business processes that links the GP with other parts of the NHS, plus e-mail access management tools to support the new local NHS organisation
The project won PA and the GPASS Unit the UK Management Consultancies Association Business Improvement Award 1998 (IT category).
