Strategy briefing for universities: No. 2
University strategies from the outside-in
Why and how universities should learn to see themselves from an external perspective
Three tests of sustainability
Universities are particularly introspective organisations. Decisions about what and how they will teach, and especially what research they will undertake, are the fiercely-protected preserve of the academic community. They are driven primarily by the research interests of individual academic staff, and by collegiate views of the appropriate scope and content of degree-level study in particular disciplines. Consideration of external interests in these decisions has been at best secondary, even when demand for the chosen provision appears uncertain.
