Telstra is the leading player in the Australian telecommunications market, employing over 50,000 staff. The company's profile has changed markedly in recent years from being primarily a provider of telephony services to becoming a new, high-performance, competitive communications company whose business is data, Internet and e-commerce. In this highly competitive marketplace there is enormous pressure to ensure that operational investment - of approximately AU$4Bn per annum - is used to best drive increased shareholder value.
