Mitigating $77 million risk through business continuity planning

This leading global transportation company has become increasingly dependent on electronic channels for doing business. More than 65% of bookings are received and processed electronically. While streamlining this process has been hugely beneficial, the dependency on electronic channels has also made them vulnerable to any event that would cut off customers from doing business.
In fact, an analysis showed that a three-day unavailability scenario of a critical IT system – a plausible event – would result in a loss of $77 million, mainly due to lost revenues.

PA was engaged to mitigate the risk associated with unavailable electronic channels. The project primarily focused on developing operational business continuity plans for critical disaster. This is in addition to ongoing technical exploration of more resilient systems through expensive and complex technology. PA approached the task by keeping a rigorous distinction between technical disaster recovery and pure business continuity planning and enforced this focus throughout.
