Reigniting the talent debate: meeting the challenges of economic uncertainty

Leadership development has overtaken employee engagement as the top priority of senior HR leaders, according to PA Consulting Group’s 2010 talent management survey.

Our survey of senior HR leaders, talent managers and HR professionals in companies across Europe reveals that HR teams have realigned their priorities to meet the increasing demands on leadership in today’s challenging business climate. As one respondent comments: “We are raising the bar on what is expected from leaders.” The related issue of succession planning has also climbed up the priority list to take second place (compared to sixth in last year’s survey).

While still a central focus for the organisations surveyed, employee engagement has slipped to third place. But strategic workforce planning has shot up the priority list from last place to sixth, as managers take a more proactive approach to analysing their future needs.

Our findings indicate that the most flexible and innovative HR leaders will be able to meet the challenges resulting from the recent economic changes. Through understanding their workforce profile, developing more effective leaders who can inspire employees, and re-engaging the workforce to gain their commitment to the organisation’s future, organisations will be able to adapt to new challenges and plan for the long term. Underpinning this, organisations will need a demanding performance culture that helps employees succeed and addresses those that are failing to meet performance standards.

HR leaders, and their teams, need to recognise that they will have to continue to deliver more with less and demonstrate that everything they do adds value to the organisation. If HR leaders can take these steps, they will reinforce their contribution to their organisations and ensure they maximise the opportunities ahead.
