Xella International - relocating a concrete plant to Bulgaria
Xella is a producer of aerated concrete building materials in South East Europe. With sales exploding, demand in the booming building materials market in this region soon exceeded the supply capacity of Xella’s plant, Bulgaria I, in Sofia. Rapid action was needed to gain competitive advantage. Xella decided to relocate a decommissioned plant from East Germany to Eastern Bulgaria, close to the Black Sea and the Romanian border.
PA supported Xella from the planning to the implementation of assets and equipment by providing best-practice methodology and regular coaching. The deliverables included a comprehensive high level management plan, detailed project plans and rigorous implementation management in order to monitor the objectives, status and needs of the project. With timely control of risks, potential setbacks, delays and costs PA transformed this from a critical task into a project being benchmark for best practice in the company.
Pro-active risk management helped avoiding unplanned interruptions and controling the costs. Xella benefited from full transparency in the planning and reporting process, while its project leaders learned project management skills and tools for future projects. The production in the Xella plant Bulgaria II started in October 2005. In 2006 the Haniel group, Xella's owner, reported the best return ever in its 250-year history.
