Setting up a strategic programme management office at An Post
An Post, Ireland’s postal operator, was experiencing a number of changes in the Irish postal market, such as market liberalisation, shifts in customer behaviours, and demographic changes, as well as internal changes to An Post’s infrastructure.
The executive team had identified a need for a transformational programme to address these challenges, developed a vision statement and 13 strategic projects.These projects cut across all directorates - a challenge for an organisation more used to working in ‘silos’ and with few project and programme management disciplines. PA Consulting Group (PA) was asked to help transform the current programme management office, that was serving a mainly adminstrative function, into an active change agent, driving and releasing change.
We redesigned the governance arrangements for the programme, established good practice programme management, trained and coached senior and middle management in project management techniques and supported project directors and managers taking projects forward. Our support enabled An Post to take firm control of it strategic transformational programme, leading to more effective implementation of large-scale change within the organsiation.
