National Health Service Connecting for Health – making telehealth a reality

A key aspect of this transformation is ‘telehealth’ - the delivery of healthcare remotely via electronic communication channels, often using monitors to track and transmit the patient’s vital signs from home to clinicians remotely. Telehealth is part of a wider social movement changing the NHS from a service focused on 'sickness' to one in which patients are supported to remain well for longer.

To achieve its mission, NHS CFH needed to make telehealth possible. In 2006 it commissioned PA Consulting Group to help it do this. Rather than looking to run a limited pilot, NHS CFH recognised that success would depend on convincing private-sector suppliers to commit to an interoperable, open-standards approach. So, in helping define and execute NHS CFH’s strategy for telehealth technology, PA needed to achieve groundbreaking innovation in both in technology and market terms.
