Developing an innovative smart metering product

The smart meter helps consumers to reduce their own demand for energy and lower their bills, whilst enabling utilities to both reduce their costs and improve their customer service.

Working closely with Landis+Gyr, PA brought together industrial design, behavioural science, user experience design, electronics, mechanics, radio and software design to create an innovative and desirable product that can deliver real benefit in reducing domestic energy use.

First functional units were exhibited seven months after starting, with the full software and delivery to production completed a few months later.
In the UK the product will initially be seen by end customers as part of the British Gas pioneering smart meter roll out.
