CellCoTec: Single-surgery solution to repair damaged cartilage

CellCoTec is a development stage orthopaedics company developing a groundbreaking tissue regeneration therapy to provide a unique, single-surgery procedure for the repair of damaged articular cartilage in the knee. To realise their aspirations, CellCoTec wanted to automate their lab-based process, improve the cell yield and continue to reduce process times.

PA was chosen to deliver this novel project because of their unique blend of development capabilities and approach to implementation not found in other consultancies.

The project required complex and delicate manipulation and processing of cells in both large and small volumes of fluid. This provided PA with many challenges which they addressed by creating a diverse project team who worked intimately with CellCoTec's management and lab teams.

Our team included life scientists to advise on the intricacies and nuances of cell handling and enzyme digestion, while our manufacturing process improvement team created novel machine concepts to overcome the technical challenges.

We facilitated workshops and team meetings to discuss and agree options, priorities and areas of uncertainty. This work was combined with practical engineering and rapid prototyping to build proof-of-principle test rigs which CellCoTec could evaluate in the laboratory.

We have a proven track record in taking lab-based processes and successfully and efficiently developing them into automated procedures with reduced process times.

"We met with several extremely capable consultancy firms who had extensive experience in the field of devices, but PA impressed us most with their expertise and hands on approach."
