WorkWise: Button-pushing and responsibility at work

Modesto Bee

18 September 2011

Mildred L. Culp

Pushing buttons can cause a great deal of conflict and ill-will in the workplace, whether you work in a positive or negative environment. It can also motivate.

Larry Scinto, IT and talent management expert at PA Consulting Group, was quoted in the “Workwise” column, a nationally syndicated Sunday column in the US discussing issues in the workplace.

In an article discussing the topic of button pushing at work, Larry points out that “button-pushing doesn’t occur only because of negative factors.”

Larry is quoted as saying: “True competitive advantage comes not from simply pushing buttons, but from pushing the ‘right’ buttons as a motivational tool. Some of the most successful CEOs have done this.”

In the article, Larry cites Steve Jobs, “whose vision, direction and drive became contagious and led to great success,” and further adds that “communications in environments like this must be top notch.”
