"It will be very hard for a university to say they are charging an undergraduate an extra £1,000, but will only be spending £250 of that on providing a better student experience."

Cambridge may go private in fees row

Paul Woodgates, head of education at PA Consulting Group, has been quoted in The Sunday Times commenting on the future of universitiesas they face cuts of about 80 per cent in government funding for undergraduate teaching in this week’s spending review.

Top universities claim that planned tuition fee rises are too small to secure their global standing and may seek to become private institutions. PA Consulting Group advises universities on fee strategies, and Paul comments: "It will be very hard for a university to say they are charging an undergraduate an extra £1,000, but will only be spending £250 of that on providing a better student experience, while the rest goes as a tax. That feels a very hard-selling message."
