Samuel Ebohon, PA energy markets expert, discusses EU legislation that is impacting the coal industry in Europe.

Samuel says: “The IED and the adoption of new updated Bref standards are having an impact on the fate of coal-fired generation in Europe, as the LCPD did before.”

He adds: “However, the principle antagonist for coal-fired generation in Germany has been the large volume of renewables which has been added over the past fifteen years, creating steady downward pressure on dark spreads, causing some coal-fired plants to close for market competitiveness reasons.”
