Mark Thomas, head of the strategy and marketing practice at PA Consulting Group, is quoted in the Financial Times Road to Recovery report. The article talks about the opportunities which have arisen from past recessions and how corporate executives need to judge when and how to seize the opportunities from this recession.
The article goes on to talk about how mergers and acquisitions have so far been scarce, in part because the stock market has been buoyant and prices have been high. But, Mark Thomas says: “There will be lots of weakened companies and, probably not this year but next year, there will be another rash of consolidation.”
First, though, he says companies need to do three things: stay liquid, to ensure they do not have the rug pulled from under them by banks; invest in the strong parts of their business and avoid the temptation to prop up the bad; and adapt their goods and services to changing patterns of consumer behaviour.
