PA’s Frazer Bennett, healthcare technology expert, is interviewed on BBC Radio 4’s World at One programme. The interview is in response to predictions from Sir Bruce Keogh, medical director of NHS England, that the hospital of the future will be in our living rooms.
Hugh Pym, BBC health editor, sets the scene by explaining that a patch on your skin can be monitored by an app on your smartphone which can call the doctor if there are signs of trouble. The patch can also enable those with long term conditions to receive increased care at home.
Hugh points out that our homes are already full of technology which could transform healthcare, leading to homes becoming the ‘hospital of the future’.
Frazer explains PA’s health patch: “It’s a thin flexible plaster like patch which is less than a millimetre thick and about the size of 50 pence coin. The small patch is the only sensor that is worn on your body.”
Hugh explains that the health patch is stuck on your arm and can tell a doctor or carer if you’ve been taking the correct dose of your medication. He goes on to say that this is a technology that PA hopes to expand to ever more complex health problems.
Frazer says: “We’re very excited about what we think this could do for monitoring lung conditions. Today, the only sensible way for lungs to be monitored is to present yourself to a doctor who will listen to them using a stethoscope.”
He explains that if a patient with, for example, mobility issues, needs to regularly get checked for their conditions they would need to leave the house and travel to the doctor for their 90 second appointment.
“If remote monitoring works, it would mean the patient can carry on with their everyday lives and their doctor simply tunes in to their lungs and listens to them remotely, whenever they need to,” explains Frazer.
Hugh also interviews Dr Jamie Brosch, GP and medical director of Medvivo and part of the Argenti telecare partnership led by PA, which rolls out telecare services across Hampshire.
