Tackling loneliness with technology

David Rees and Graham Allen | The MJ | 6 September 2017

The full article is published on The MJ

David Rees, head of local government services at PA Consulting Group and Graham Allen, director of health and care at Hampshire CC share their insights on how technology can help those in later life combat loneliness.

The article examines the negative impact loneliness can have, being as harmful to a person’s health as obesity or smoking 15 cigarettes a day. It notes how a recent project in Hampshire putting technology to the test has helped keep older people socially active and engaged. Hampshire CC worked with PA to pilot two types of technology with 56 older people (the oldest aged 101). The project’s aim was to see if using the devices could help participants better connect with family, friends and their local communities, especially in rural areas.
