GSM 'Clip-on' companion makes mobile convergence a reality
UbiNetics today announces its GDA100 GSM companion - a 'clip-on' device which gives mobile-phone capabilities to Personal Digital Assistants (PDAs), enabling users to browse the Internet, send and receive emails, faxes and SMS.
The first of a range of UbiNetics companion clip-ons, this slim and compact product offers the ultimate in mobile computing convenience as it gives access to services that are usually confined to the home or office.
UbiNetics' lightweight companion - weighing in at just 115 grams - dispenses with the need to carry both a PDA and a mobile phone. Users simply remove their mini SIM card from their mobile handset and insert it into the GDA100 - a hands-free set - and UbiNetics' companion software then transforms the clip-on into a GSM phone.
The GDA100 GSM companion can receive and transmit data in multiple modes at up to 14.4 kbps. It has dual-band capability and is designed to operate on the E-GSM900 MHz band and the GSM (PCN) 1800 MHz band.
The UbiNetics GDA100 GSM companion is the latest in a range of mobile Internet devices developed by the Cambridge, UK-based company for the consumer market.
"The much-talked about mobile convergence vision has arrived," said Ali Pourtaheri, Chief Executive Officer of UbiNetics. "Surfing the net or calling your friends, family and colleagues using your PDA has become a reality with our GDA100 companion. By providing off-the-shelf 2G WAP-compatible solutions now and developing HSCSD and GPRS compatible devices ready for the adoption of the next generation technologies, UbiNetics really is addressing the burgeoning market for mobile data communications applications."
A key advantage of the GDA100 GSM companion, which is projected to retail at around £100, is that users will need only one address book and calendar as the PDA automatically updates data keyed into the PDA to the mobile phone and vice versa. The UbiNetics GDA100 GSM companion will be commercially available in the autumn.
