PA Consulting Group is building a demonstrator for wide band third generation mobile communication technology. The demonstrator is providing experience in CDMA technology and will become a test-bed for algorithms, hardware and software partitioning, and radio circuitry.
The project follows the completion of a study of the key elements of the American, European and Japanese approaches to wideband third generation technology, and a selected number of PA's clients - Racal Instruments Limited, Hitachi Micro Systems Europe Ltd and Samsung Electronics Research Institute - are participating in the development as partners.
According to Ali Pourtaheri, head of PA's Wireless Technology Business Unit:
"The objective of the project is to develop significant knowledge of third generation cellular technology and be in the strongest position to respond rapidly to market requirements."
"Our partners will gain significant benefits including practical insight into emerging European and Japanese standards, reduced risk, fast development programmes, and access to all technical expertise gained during the project. They will also build up their in-house skills in preparation for design and manufacture of third generation products and the development of value-added services for the 21st century.
"Eventually the project will demonstrate that the combined team has overcome the key technical problems presented by wideband third generation technology."
Greg Maton, Business Unit Director, Racal Instruments Limited, believes that:
"The partnership with PA will give us valuable experience and expertise in third generation technologies which will enable Racal to continue to provide timely and effective test solutions to the radiocommunications industry."
