Sir - 2004 did not see a 3G Christmas ('Few 3G phones bought at Christmas, says Carphone', 16/17 January), but the industry can look forward to a prosperous new year in 2005.
Ofcom’s statement that it will consider withdrawing 3G licences from those who fail to meet 2007 coverage targets will not dampen the future of 3G - demand for 3G networks by then could well prove a much more effective 'carrot' than Ofcom’s 'stick'.
Despite 3G’s initial problems, networks are now mature and operators have increased confidence that they can roll out additional capacity to support rapid 3G take-up in 2005 and beyond, allowing operators to reach Ofcom’s deadline with ease.
So, although 2004 may not have been a 3G Christmas, Christmas 2005 almost certainly will be.
