Introduction
Early in 2004, London Metal Exchange (LME) announced the intention to offer facilities for trading of two polymer plastics feature contracts, polypropylene and linear low-density polyethylene. Over the last 127 years, LME has established a dominant position in the non-ferrous metals futures industry. It could be argued that the decision to launch plastics on the exchange is a bold one and in many ways it is, however, while this is an innovative development at LME, it is not as radical as it may seem.
