UbiNetics test arm sold to Aeroflex

The test and measurement division of UbiNetics has been bought by US firm Aeroflex for £46m.

Cambridge-based UbiNetics currently has two businesses - a 3G terminal software development and handset modem reference design business, and the 3G mobile test and measurement system business, which is being sold to Aeroflex.

According to UbiNetics, the sale will allow it to concentrate on its remaining 3G terminal software development business, responsible for the multimode 3G protocol stack and 3G modem reference designs, used in mobile handsets.

"The deal with Aeroflex represents an excellent return for UbiNetics shareholders and will enable UbiNetics' test business to build its market position further by integrating with Aeroflex's established test products," said Jon Moynihan, chairman of UbiNetics.

UbiNetics spun out of PA Consulting in 1999 and in the last six years the firm has grown from a 16 employee operation to a company employing over 400 people, and with a £24m turnover.

This is the latest in a line of UK purchases for the US test firm. Two years ago it acquired the wireless test arm of Racal Instruments and prior to that it bought Marconi Instruments.

The US firm will make a further contingent payment of 4.6 per cent dependent on whether certain performance targets are met after a year.
