PA’s Ed Savage, a cyber security expert, is quoted in The Wall Street Journal on how to manage the “insider threat” posed by employees to their organisations’ security.
Ed talks about why an insider threat may occur: “We know there is a 30-day window between a trigger event in which an employee will take action against an employer.”
Ed gives an example of an insider threat and the damage it can cause: “An attack like the one on UBS can be devastating because it can take years to recover from the lost or corrupt data and it can cost millions of dollars to clean up.”
To help combat this issue, Ed explains that insider threats can be mitigated by improving processes and by being aware of what’s happening with your employees.
Ed goes on to say that when companies are choosing people to work with important IT information, they may want to carry out extra background research as people may have a record of problems with authority or not fitting in well with their peers.
