Standards and quality: Wider responsibilities move up agenda

Rod Newing
The Financial Times - Business of Consulting Report, page 4
16 November 2009

Management consultants are pilloried when projects go wrong, especially public sector work that is subject to official scrutiny, reports Rod Newing in the Financial Times Business of Consulting report. It is vital for consultants to be able to demonstrate to the wider business community and to the general public that they not only apply appropriate quality standards to their work, but contribute to the wider common good.

In this article PA’s head of government practice Colm Reilly gives his views on the problem. Colm says the problem is not that no one knows what to do, but that it is just not done systematically. Standards and protocols already exist but are not always used. His solution is a rigorous and consistent focus on the basics of project management and their implementation.

Critical to adding value successfully is agreeing the objectives and scope of the work, together with the benefits to be expected and how they will be measured.

You can read the article in full here and also read PA’s comments in the report on the state of the profession, on the financial services sector, on consultancy as a buyers’ market, and on consultancy recruitment from the defence sector, on public sector consulting.  The report also features an article dedicated to PA’s work in Iraq, based on an interview with consultant Angus Jackson who spent four years working on a project in southern Iraq to help restore safe water supplies in the Basra region.
