Derek notes the importance of integrating IT with the business, organising your IT team with the functions of the business in mind.
“It helps to align with the business functions so that your IT employees are focused on how to fix what happens to a billing customer rather than how to fix a Unix server,” says Derek. “For instance, you don’t want someone who only works on the payroll application; they’ll do a better job and keep that function happier if they understand applicant management and payroll and the things that function actually does.”
Derek also discusses the importance of team-building, noting that sometimes an informal conversation about your most memorable music events can do more to build relationships and teamwork.
“Those conversations are really important for the individual and the team,” Lonsdale says. “Knowing people and understanding what they’re like outside of work is really important for team-building.”
