I spend as much as 80 per cent of my time travelling, often to the Balkans, Middle East, China and the former Soviet Union. I always pack a satellite phone and an iPod Touch. The satellite phone is invaluable when any kind of calamity strikes and the mobile phone network is overwhelmed, although you must be in the open air to use it. It is not inexpensive, but it’s a small price to pay for reliable communication. All senior PA people travel with an iPod Touch, to receive podcasts and video content. I also carry any cabling I need to recharge the devices via my laptop. Caught in Georgia’s civil unrest a year ago, being able to use my laptop to charge my mobile and satellite phone was vital.
