Stephen Bailey, IT security expert, is quoted in the Financial Times The Connected Business special report on cyber security.
Stephen looks at the challenges of reporting security breaches. Regulators are stepping up the pressure on companies to report IT security breaches in a timely fashion – especially when customer data is compromised or when privacy is an issue. Stephen says: “A strict time limit does not bode well for the quality of reporting.”
He goes on: “My main concern is that companies might be forced into providing either an incomplete or a vastly overstated picture of a breach that could do more harm than good. Establishing the facts about a breach is important, of course, but the real priority in the chaotic first 24 hours after it is discovered should be containing the problem and taking remedial steps to prevent it from happening again.”
