PA’s David Stansell, a machine-to-machine (M2M) expert, is quoted in an article in The Economist Intelligence Unit report, ‘Rise of the machines’. The report looks at the move from hype to reality in the burgeoning market for machine-to-machine communication.
In the article, David looks at whether we are approaching a tipping point and what will drive take-up in the next decade. David comments on the impact of falling costs, wider connectivity and maturing technologies: “The fundamental economic reason why M2M’s potential has appeared, relatively suddenly, is that the cost of introducing communications technology to other electronic devices has gone below the threshold required to make it viable for many applications.”
David goes on to describe a general fall from “tens” of dollars or euros a few years back to just single-digit costs. “It’s approaching an order of magnitude cheaper now.”
