The knockout idea – is health and social care integration on the ropes?

Health and social care leaders face an enormous and well documented challenge: meeting the needs of an ageing population will cost more in services than the sector can afford.
This problem is not new and there is no simple answer. What is agreed, however, is that any solution will require providers to think and operate differently in the future.

At a recent event in Manchester, PA Consulting Group, along with our partners at the New Local Government Network think-tank, asked health and social care leaders to challenge some ‘sacred cows’ in health and social care.

We urged them to consider the radical solutions that may be required if the UK is to have the sustainable, fit-for-purpose system it needs. 'The knockout idea' captures the comments and thoughts of health and social care leaders who attended this event. Some of the key questions tackled included:

  • Are we being over-optimistic about the benefits that integration will bring?

  • At what point should responsibility and delivery of care be put in the hands of central government so local government can prioritise its core purpose of being leaders of places?

  • For social care to be sustainable, where should the cost burden fall? What innovative funding and investment models might be developed to ensure the sustainability of the system?
