As the higher education system faces a cumulative barrage of disruptions and uncertainties, it has become fashionable to speculate on the outlook for the established universities. 

Who will be the winners and losers in the digitally-powered global marketplace? 

Will all of the current universities survive? 

Are too many universities and other providers chasing fewer students?

In our latest higher education discussion paper, we explore these questions, drawing on PA’s experience of working with a broad cross-section of long-established universities and new providers. 

The paper proposes a new taxonomy of higher education providers based not on institutional missions or affiliations, but on different responses to the threats and opportunities of a new world order. We go on to suggest the appropriate strategic priorities for higher education institutions in each of the emerging categories.
