Denver International Airport

Project rescue of the automated baggage handling system

Denver International Airport (DIA) is the seventh busiest airport in the world, a major hub for the West, and the first completely new airport in the US for 20 years. DIA is a $5 billion development with the main airport building covering about one mile in each direction.

Unfortunately, owing to a wide range of problems, the official opening of the airport had been delayed twice.

One of the causes of delay was the completion of a state-of-the-art fully automated baggage handling system. It was only when testing began that the enormity of the system integration challenge became clear. To resolve this serious situation, BAE called in PA Consulting Group to manage the commissioning process while BAE focused on the remaining technical issues, thus ensuring the airport could open with a modified system. The modified system covered outbound, inbound and transfer baggage for United Airlines.
