Improving staff retention with rapid initiatives and long-term actions
Sainsbury’s had identified that staff turnover among non-management colleagues in its retail stores was a significant issue. Turnover had been increasing for some years and was believed to represent a significant cost to the business, but there was no clear understanding of what this cost was, or how it might be reduced.
Sainsbury’s HR director therefore commissioned PA to undertake a project to establish the true cost and drivers of turnover, identify short-term improvement initiatives and develop a programme of longer-term actions.
PA's statistical analysis correlated store turnover rates with a wide range of factors (eg demographic data and store performance data) to test some of the hypotheses. The findings were used to identify ways of grouping stores into ‘clusters’ so that meaningful targets could be set for store managers against peer stores. The team then developed a compelling business case and plan for a number of short-term initiatives aimed at making reductions in turnover quickly at minimal investment.
