Disi-Amman Water Supply Project

Water scarcity is the single most important natural constraint on Jordan’s economic growth. Rapid increases in population and industrial development have placed unprecedented demands on the resources. Actual water uses have exceeded the available Jordanian supply. Renewable ground water in the north is being exploited at unsustainable rates and water quality is deteriorating. Existing demands are not being satisfactorily met and development costs for the remaining resources are rising rapidly.

MWH was retained as the lead firm in an international consortium of consulting engineering companies to determine the feasibility of conveying an additional 120 million cubic meters of water per year (87 MGD) to Amman from the Rum Aquifer located at Disi Mudawwara in the southern part of Jordan. The water would be conveyed a distance of 320 kilometers (200 miles) over rugged topography with pumping heads in excess of 500 psi. The project was divided into two stages.

Services during the first stage included the following: reconnaissance of the three alternative pipeline routes to determine physical and environmental requirements for the alternative routes; geotechnical evaluation of the alternative routes; determination of access and property restrictions related to right-of-way acquisition, construction and operation; preparation of alternative pipeline routing details and profiles; environmental studies and environmental impact assessments; analysis of build-own-operate and build-own-transfer options; and preparation of inception, conceptual and feasibility reports.
