Wastewater treatment and reuse in small rural communities

Septage sampling in North Shouneh, Jordan
|
Building on the durable successes achieved in Drarga (see Morocco project description), ECODIT is working with the Water Authority of Jordan (WAJ), USAID/Jordan and local communities to plan, study, design and supervise the construction of two low-cost, low-maintenance wastewater (septage from cesspits) treatment and reuse (WWT&R) facilities to serve the communities of Shobak and North Shouneh. The project will serve as a model for other small communities in Jordan.
ECODIT conducted participatory planning activities that led to the selection of Shobak and North Shouneh as the two host communities for the proposed WWT&R facilities. It is currently preparing a detailed technical, economic/financial and institutional feasibility study and environmental assessment of the proposed project in each community. ECODIT then will direct the preparation of detailed engineering design/drawings and bid documents and assist WAJ in selecting contractors and supervising construction. ECODIT will monitor plant operations to ensure that water reuse by farmers conforms to applicable Jordanian standards.

ECODIT will develop local capacity to operate and maintain these facilities in a sustainable manner. They will help put in place the institutional partnerships and legal framework required to turn over the operation and maintenance of these facilities to local entities after the project ends. The team will also help establish the self-financing mechanisms necessary to ensure cost recovery in the long term. ECODIT will assist the Government of Jordan in formulating policies, guidelines and standards related to wastewater treatment and reuse in small communities.
