Mexico City's new environment management system will benefit millions of residents

PA Consulting Group has developed and supervised the implementation of an environmental management system (EMS) for Mexico City. With USAID support, and working with the Mexico City Environmental Department, the EMS is initially covering the internal activities of the Mexico City government offices, including energy consumption, water use efficiency, office materials procurement and waste disposal.
PA has helped Mexico City develop parallel agreements with the National Commission for Energy Savings (CONAE), the Mexican Water Technology Institute (IMTA), and the Secretariat for Environment and Natural Resources (SEMARNAT). Each of these institutions is providing guidance and training to Mexico City government staff in the area of their expertise, in order to methodically carry out energy and environment audits and develop recommendations for efficiency and environmental improvements of all the City facilities. In the third year, the EMS work proceeded to include municipal operation activities, such as tree nurseries and transportation systems. Eventually, the EMS will expand to the 16 Delegations (local governments) in Mexico City, and finally to the industries and other facilities located within the city limits.
