Water is life. An adequate supply of clean water for drinking, cooking and personal needs is a necessity, not a luxury and basic sanitation services are essential to public health and safety Historically, water was viewed as an infinite and infinitely renewable resource. But today more than a billion people do not have access to good drinking water – mostly in rural areas – and 40% of the world’s population does not have access to basic sanitation, according to the World Health Organisation.
Compounding this problem is the increasing use of groundwater for agricultural irrigation. This has helped increase agricultural output in many countries, but it has also led to the depletion of underground aquifers and the wasteful consumption of water.
