Dramatically improving the security of mission and safety critical systems for BP

BP needed to assess and improve the security of its process control systems that run its refineries, chemical plants, pipelines, terminals and platforms at over 400 sites worldwide. PA was asked to assist in this task because of the diversity of skills and experience required to support the programme, including: process control engineering, IT security and assurance, IT sourcing, training and programme management.

We worked with BP in the formation and management of a global security assessment and improvement programme. We developed an innovative risk assessment methodology, rolled out to all sites, and helped establish a number of central security services to support on-going security management. The programme is widely acknowledged as an industry-leading initiative and has resulted in a dramatic increase in the security of BP’s process control systems. Security of these mission and safety critical systems is now managed as day-to-day business.
