The renovation of existing cities and the cultivation of new cities are now taking place at an unprecedented scale. Information and Communication Technology (ICT) infrastructure needs to be integrated into the changing city, creating a smart city. This will enhance the lives of citizens, encourage businesses to invest and create a sustainable urban environment.
How can you use your ICT infrastructure to create a smart city? To find out how your city can become a smart city request our book 'people + technology = change'.
Improving lives for citizens
Smart city developments range from greenfield sites where a whole variety of smart communication, utility and infrastructure networks are built in from the start, to projects in existing cities that connect up an array of current infrastructure. These projects improve services, make cities run more efficiently and create a competitive advantage above other cities.
There are a huge range of services that a smart city network will deliver, including advanced education and healthcare, public transport monitoring and road management, building management, intelligent homes (voice, data, video services) and advertising. The network can also be used to connect water, sewage, cooling, irrigation, gas, electricity and power services and deliver efficiencies to providers.
Governments need to consider three activities to ensure they can exploit the potential of smart cities:
-
Understand how the smart city infrastructure can benefit the city
-
Integrate plans for the ICT infrastructure into other plans for the city
-
Decide the role the municipality will have.
